The annual cost of public lighting in Australia is about $210 million, of which public lighting on minor roads makes up $100 million. Public lighting of minor roads uses 486 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity and is responsible for 537,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Local governments, which are being encouraged by the Australian and State Governments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, are paying particular attention to public lighting because it is the single largest source, typically accounting for 30 to 50 per cent of their greenhouse gas emissions. (Poulton et al 2006).
